Election history: 1st-time candidate for School Committee
Alex Bowers is perhaps best known for her time as a local journalist covering mostly Cambridge Public Schools.
She is parent to two CRLS students and served on two CPS School Councils (CRLS currently) and one year on the School Council for the Community Charter School of Cambridge. She helped co-write the 2025 CRLS Family Handbook and the 2023 CPS School Council Handbook, and volunteers locally with various organizations.
She previously taught at a grammar school in Lahore and at a high school in Changsha, Hunan Province.
Alex Bowers wants to bring her deep knowledge of CPS systems and processes to improve School Committee policies. Her policy priorities include adding more paraprofessionals and targeted teacher professional development, individualized learning plans/interventions for students, and highlight and expand successful programs (e.g. Montessori; immersion; music). She also places an emphasis on improving family outreach and communication.
Alex wants to leverage the existing i-Ready system to provide better transparency and lower-latency reporting to parents, so they can be more tightly looped in on student performance.
When Cambridge phased Algebra I out of the upper schools, all of the other non-district schools kept algebra. What we had was students re-entering the high school already academically ahead in math if they did not go to one of the Cambridge Upper Schools. So you have inequitable access to knowledge that is damaging to the social and academic fabric of the high school.
There have been a lot of initiatives over the years, but not a lot of analysis of what works and what doesn't.

“I wrote the document that became the CRLS family guidebook, which is a collection of notes that I just sent to families that I knew, because so many of my kids’ classmates had gone outside of CPS for their middle school,” she said.
